Frequency Standards: Relativistic Effects

Scientific paper

Frequency shifts due to relativistic effects in a laser cooled cesium fountain frequency standard, i.e. second-order Doppler shift and gravitational shift, are investigated. The result shows that the second-order Doppler shift and the gravitational shift inside a cesium fountain frequency standard are of the order of 10-17 under typical conditions for operation, thus negligible compared with other shifts. But the gravitational shift associated with the elevation or the gravitational potential of the standard is of the order of 10-13 and should be corrected when the frequency of the standard is compared with other primary frequency standard, or when the standard is used for TAI computation.
