Results are reported of a search for rare events of precipitation of relativistic electrons in a narrow band of the L shell and simultaneous ion precipitation spikes. The data were collected with four polar orbiting spacecraft which all carried spectrometers, some for electrons, others for protons or ions. Particles/electrons with threshold energies of 30 keV-6.5 MeV were detected by the P72-1, P78-1, S81-1 and the NOAA-6 satellites. Electrons with relativistic energies at the plasmapause were seen during only 1 percent of the events. Attempts to correlate the spike events recorded by the various satellites in different regions of the L shell showed that precipitation events could subtend an arc of up to 25 deg and last up to 2000 sec. A mild correlation was also found with substorms. The events are interpreted in terms of cyclotron resonance wave-particle interactions among radiation belt particles. The narrow energy bands observed are attributed to fine structures in the cold plasma density profiles near the plasmapause.
