The dielectric response of a dense relativistic ultradegenerate (T = 0) electron gas is investigated for the case of a zero magnetic field, which is most applicable to white dwarfs. The dielectric response function for the system considered is obtained using a linearized self-consistent field treatment. A neutralizing smeared-out background of positive charge is assumed, an expression for the longitudinal dielectric function is determined via a linearized Hartree approximation, and a dispersion relation is obtained in the long-wavelength region. Conditions for plasma-wave damping are examined along with the electrostatic potential about a test charge immersed in the gas. The dispersion relation is compared with its nonrelativistic counterpart, and a different density dependence of the plasma frequencies is found.
