Relationships between the y component of the interplanetary electric field and the low-latitude magnetospheric convection electric field are investigated to provide an estimate of the field transfer efficiency between the solar wind and the magnetosphere. On the basis of a case-by-case study of 14 plasmapause crossings by the GEOS-1 and ISEE-1 spacecraft which allowed the determination of the magnetospheric convection field, a relation is established between the magnetospheric and interplanetary field components. The deduced field transfer equation is then verified by comparison with statistical data showing the separate correlations of the interplanetary and magnetospheric convection fields with the Km index. Transfer coefficients representing a coupling efficiency of about 13 percent are obtained in both cases. Results also indicate the presence of a positive magnetospheric field even when the solar wind field component is negative, provided it is statistically greater than -0.92 mV/m.
