Observations of both the Sun and other magnetically active stars have shown that non-flare soft-X-ray (SXR) luminosity is related to the total unsigned photospheric magnetic flux by a power law, with exponent ~1.2 (Pevtsov 2003). The relationship between magnetic flux and *flaring* soft-X-rays (SXR) and hard-X-ray (HXR) luminosities, however, has not been characterized. We will investigate the relationship between properties of SXR and HXR flare emission and photospheric magnetic fields for the solar case, using flare observations from the RHESSI and GOES satellites, combined with active region (AR) magnetograms from SOHO/MDI.
