Using the extreme values for the relative He/H and N/O abundances found for the planetary nebulae (PN) of various populations, 97 PN were classified into four groups, ranging from class-1 PN with high He/H and N/O enrichment values, to class-2 PN with small ratios. Most class-1 PN are of morphological type B; the spectra of their nuclei are continuous or of type O, and their mean excitation class is high. The distance from the galactic plane of the class-1 PN is low and their velocity ellipsoid is very flat; their probable age must be in the range 518 million to 1 billion years. The spatial and kinematic parameters of the class-2 PN are those of a mixed 'old disk-halo' population; these PN are more than 10 times as old than those of class 1.
