The orbits of a monopole, which is assumed to have originated in outer space as a primary cosmic ray, in the magnetic field of the earth is investigated by a combination of computer-generated orbits and an approximate analysis in which the earth's field is represented by a centered dipole of magnetic moment equal to 0.31 G times the cube of its radius. Quantitative results are obtained which show that the probability of observing a monopole at earth with a velocity of about 0.5c decreases as the monopole mass decreases. For masses less than 10,000 GeV/c squared the effective cross section of earth is roughly the product of the geometric cross section and the ratio of the monopole mass to 8000 GeV/c squared.
