During the night in the F-region about the equator, plasma density depletion bubbles form due to coupling to the lower atmosphere. April 2008, C/NOFS or Communications/Navigation Outage Forecasting System developed by the Air Force Research Lab was launched to investigate such phenomenon. Orbiting at a 13 degree inclination about the equator, C/NOFS measures ion density in situ within the F-region. Sampling ion densities at least 1 Hz for over year, there is abundant information about the ion density at several altitudes ranging from 400 to 850km, over a range of locations ±13 deg geographic latitude, during the night and day. From these measurements, plasma density irregularities are found on the night side during orbits. More interestingly, it is possible to map out where these irregularities occur by longitude and latitude. In other words, it is possible to map out the regional dependence of equatorial plasma density irregularities. One of the most significant observations from such mapping is a four-wave structure of where these irregularities most frequently occur. Seasonal dependence is also investigated.
