Boutron's comments are addressed. Evidence is presented suggesting that the high trace metal concentrations observed at a depth of 5.8 - 5.4 m at Dome C, east Antarctica and in a set of Arctic and Antarctic ice core samples the author has analysed are real and not due to contamination. The importance of carrying out further trace metal studied in polar snow and ice is emphasized.
