Results are reported for an experimental study of the refraction of 8- and 13.5-mm radio waves from the sun and of 13.5-mm waves from the galactic radio source W49 A at angles of elevation ranging from 0 to 20 deg. The experimental data are compared with theoretical calculations based on measurements of the refractive index of air at the seaside site of the radio antenna. The results show that there is no significant discrepancy between the angles of refraction for the 8- and 13.5-mm waves emitted by the sun, but the theoretical and experimental angles of refraction differ noticeably for angles of elevation less than 6 deg. A smaller discrepancy between the computed and observed angles of refraction is found for W49 A. The discrepancies are attributed to stratified inhomogeneities in the refractive index of the terrestrial atmosphere as well as to a difference between the surface refractive indices of air at the telescope and along the radio propagation path.
