Reflectivity measurements in the VUV wavelength region were performed on ROSAT materials, i.e., iron-nickel alloy Invar and a carbon fiber compound (CFC). The central connecting flange for the parabolic and hyperbolic mirror sections of the telescope are made of Invar; the thermal baffle in front of the telescope is made of CFC. The X-ray detectors are located in the focal plane of the telescope and of two redundant positional sensitive proportional counters and a high resolution image converter; they are mounted on a carrousel platform and can be positioned alternately in the focal plane. The locations in the central flange and the thermal baffle which are critical with respect to the suppression of scattered UV light in order to avoid a substantial background level in the imaging X-ray detectors, are identified.
