The observation of distance-dependent red shift in the spectra of cosmic light sources, made by Hubble some 50 years ago, forms the basis of the concept of a finite expanding universe. In the present paper, some results that have given rise to doubts concerning the correctness of the expansion hypothesis are reviewed, and some alternative models of the universe and its evolution are suggested.
