General principles of covariance analysis of trajectories are set forth in order to determine what types of trajectories would be suitable for celestial mechanics experiments for refining the values of the gravitational parameter of the earth and moon (GE and GM, respectively) from oblique range and radial velocity measurements of spacecraft. Three types of trajectories are considered: (1) moon landing trajectory, (2) direct hyperbolic flyby of the moon (away from the earth), and (3) return hyperbolic flight past the moon (toward earth). It is found that GE determinations are generally insensitive to the trajectory used, while for determining GM corrections the accuracy of corrections determined from flyby experiments is an order of magnitude higher than that obtained from lunar landing experiments.
