The Image Photon Counting System (IPCS) has become one of the major systems for the study of very faint objects, and modifications for improving the performance of the detector have been designed. The present paper is concerned with a recent improvement involving a scanning system which significantly affects the astronomical performance. It is pointed out that the details of the scanning system are likely to be of particular interest to observers who use the IPCS on the 2.5-m Isaac Newton Telescope (La Palma) or on the 3.9-m Anglo-Australian Telescope (Siding Spring). The scanning system has been added to reduce the 'granularity' in the data. This term refers to the pixel-to-pixel sensitivity variations which represent one of the practical limitations with respect to the use of the IPCS.
