A phenomenological approach is taken to the description of gas dynamics (hydrogen escape) in the transition layer between the thermosphere and the exosphere. It is found that for the requirement of heat flux conservation in the transition layer to be fulfilled, the hydrogen temperature must be considerably lower than the oxygen temperature. A smaller escape rate than that of Jeans is predicted on the basis of this low hydrogen temperature. The geocoronal hydrogen distribution is thus characterized by a hydrogen scale height considerably smaller than heretofore assumed.
