Galaxy clusters with spectroscopic redshifts z≳1 are still rare and prized objects, desirable for cosmological and galaxy evolution studies. We have identified 5 high-redshift galaxy clusters in the ROSAT Optical X-ray Survey (ROXS), selected based on their extended x- ray emission (a robust indicator of a massive gravitational potential) and confirmed by near infrared imaging (which revealed red sequence galaxies with colors similar to known clusters at z> 0.8). Distant x- ray luminous clusters are rare - only 5 found in the 5 sq.deg. area of ROXS - and are not easily identified by optical/IR cluster surveys. We propose to measure the cluster redshifts, which will pave the way for their use in a wide variety of evolutionary and cosmological studies. By significantly increasing the sample of high redshift x-ray luminous clusters, such studies will have improved coverage of redshift and mass parameter space. We request a total of 1.5 nights, with runs in a range of observing conditions.
