The authors have analysed the ultraviolet continuum energy distributions of a large sample of quasars, covering a wide redshift and luminosity range. The continuum below Lyα is steeper than that above, and the amount of steepening increases with redshift. The steepening at low redshifts is consistent with the current models for the ultraviolet spectrum. At higher redshifts explanations in terms of intrinsic absorption, or reddening from a variety of sources seem unlikely, but the steepening is consistent with absorption due to intervening clouds. The data support evolution in the number density of absorbers with redshift at the 3σ level.
