The design and operation of the Prognoz-6 multiwire proportional counter for the recording of cosmic X-rays are described. An optimal distance between wires has been chosen which assures constant recording efficiency and energy resolution in the whole working area of the counter for a minimum number of wires. The introduction into the total gas volume of a second series of wires connected to the anticoincidence circuit makes possible a more efficient utilization of the anticoincidence system for reducing the background. Results obtained with the 100-sq-cm-area counter aboard Prognoz-6 have shown that radiation from discrete X-ray sources can be recorded with a sensitivity of 0.1-0.3 per sq cm-s.
