A solution to the Petchek problem concerning the reconnection of magnetic field lines in the two-dimensional asymmetric case is obtained. The solution is asymptotic with respect to the Mach-Alfven number, and it is assumed that the plasma and magnetic-field parameters are dissimilar on different sides of the current sheet. Attention is given to the determination of the system of MHD discontinuities and rarefaction waves, the Y-components of velocity and the magnetic field, and the role of dissipative effects.
