The two very prominent BL Lac objects PKS 2155-304 and Mrk 421 have been
observed repeatedly as calibration targets for the various instruments
on board of XMM-Newton and Chandra. We present a short discussion of
these publicly available data and highlight first results and the
potential capabilities of these new X-ray missions.
