Recent observations with the 3.60-m ESO telescope show that the hot spots surrounding the nucleus of NGC 2997 appear as a ring in H-alpha light. The galaxy is found to be inclined 45 deg with respect to the plane of the sky; this can be interpreted as the elliptical H II tore in the plane of NGC 2997 of strong eccentricity, or an H II bubble. The hot spots have a brightness similar to the brightest stellar associations and H II regions of the spiral arms, and about ten times the brightness of the conventional chains of H II regions defining the arms.
