The NRAO in Green Bank, WV has initiated numerous educational programs over the last 12 years. Our activities include education outreach, informal education for K-12 students and the public, teacher enhancement and training, direct collaborations between staff and students, and creation of classroom activities. Many of our activities involve partnerships with local, state and national agencies and programs. We hope that sharing our experiences from more than a decade of educational experimentation will assist others. Some recent highlights include: o Partnership between NRAO and the local middle school. NRAO staff and middle school teachers have developed an interdisciplinary astronomy project for 7th graders. o Astronomy Education Center. We are currently seeking funds for an astronomy education center that will house classrooms and 4000 sq-ft of astronomy exhibits; the NSF has awarded funding for exhibits. o New NSF-funded K-12 Teacher Enhancement Program. The program includes a research institute (where participants use a forty foot radio telescope) and, in the following year, technology training (featuring the Hands-On Universe software and curriculum). NRAO collaborates with the WV department of education and the science education department of WV University. o Field Trips. Small groups of students, which usually spend the night, take on the professional role of astronomer as they use the forty foot telescope to investigate questions appropriate for their level. Field trip activities are created in partnership with the classroom teacher. o Mentorships. NRAO astronomers mentor high school and college students on projects of their own design.
