The agreement between observations and numerical relativistic (magneto)hydrodynamic and emission simulations of jets has proven the value of such computations for the study of these objects. Non-linear hydrodynamic evolution of traveling perturbations, together with other relativistic effects determining the jet emission, may lead to intricate jet emission patterns, such as upstream motions or slow moving components trailing superluminal features. Both observations and simulations suggest that consideration of jets as composed by a series of Gaussian components, each associated with a single shock wave, may result an overly simplistic idealization when interpreting the new, more detailed, information of the emission from actual jets.
