Instrumentation for the large telescopes discussed at this conference have emphasised focal plane detectors consisting of large charge-coupled devices or mosaics of CCDs with more than four million pixels. The data rate from these detectors will overwhelm the traditional minor micro-computer or workstation. Real-time automated preprocessing and inital analysis of these data will be required.
