Large-Scale Structure: Earth Ionosphere
Scientific paper
Numerical experiments are conducted on the basis of a three-dimensional time-dependent model of the ionosphere to investigate the readjustment of the large-scale structure of the high-latitude ionosphere upon a simultaneous change in the UV radiation of the Sun and the Earth's thermosphere. It is shown that in contrast to the mid-latitude ionosphere, a breakdown in the steady state in the high-latitude ionosphere is accompanied by a more extended recovery time, which is related to the dominant process of plasma convection under the action of an electric field of magnetospheric origin. The upshot of this is that the high-latitude ionosphere is located in a nonsteady state practically constantly.
