The morphology of a water-rock interaction front may become organized into nonplanar forms such as fingers or scallops. This is due to a flow-focusing mechanism driven by the imposed fluid flow. The phenomenon is modeled by a set of reaction-transport equations for a carbonate-cemented sandstone. A computer code is set up to solve the equations and hence predict the temporal evolution of the phenomenon. The code involves a number of unique numerical algorithms that allow for a rapid convergence of the calculation. Front fingering, scalloping, finger tip splitting and capping, and other morphological effects are demonstrated. The influence of flow speed, flow channel width, as well as varying modes of calcite and dolomite in the host rock are investigated. The potential importance of such simulations for developing and understanding of diagenesis and in petroleum engineering is discussed.
