The design and operation of the Reentry Vehicle, the Lander, and the Cruising Balloon of the Soviet multipurpose project VEGA are reviewed, and some results of the mission are reported. In particular, attention is given to the results of ground tests conducted on the landing systems, helicopter and aircraft tests of the mockups of the Reentry Vehicle, and details of the soft landing of the VEGA 1 and 2 Landers on the surface of Venus. Preliminary results of studies of the atmosphere composition and structure and studies of the Venus surface conducted with the aid of scientific instruments mounted on the Reentry Vehicle and the Landers are presented.
