Two methods for ray-tracing in a linearly stratified plasma are suggested, which have applications for magnetospheric and/or astrophysical conditions. The application of these methods to the problem of whistler-mode propagation is considered in detail. The expression for a wave-normal angle theta(l), for which changes in theta are not accompanied by changes in the ray direction, is derived. Application of this result to the interpretation of emissions with an inverted V-shape to the upper boundary of their spectrograms, seen by satellites in the topside ionosphere, is discussed.
