The laser/flash-photolysis resonance fluorescence method was used for investigating the reaction kinetics of OH with COS. The complicating secondary reactions of COS photofragments were eliminated by 193 nm laser photolysis of HNO3 as a source of OH. The rate constant was much slower than indicated by past results; the experiments established the upper limit for k sub l at 298 K to be 8.8 x 10 to the -15th/cu cm-molecule/s. The results indicate that the title reaction is only a minor COS degradation pathway in the troposphere.
