The lanthanide elements (except Gd and Er) have been determined in the standard granite G-1 and standard diabase W-1 by neutron activation and a chemical procedure consisting of pre-irradiation separation of the rare earth group and post-irradiation column chromatography of individual lanthanides using bis(2-ethylhexyl)orthophosphoric acid. The logarithm of abundance, normalized to the corresponding abundance in chondrite meteorites, decreases linearly with Z, for G-1 from 57 La to 66 Dy by an abundance ratio of 35 and for W-1 from 57 La to 71 Lu by a ratio of 3.0. Relative to the trend of normalized abundances for the other lanthanides, Eu is singularly low by a factor of 0.7 in G-l but is normal in W-1.
