The observation of the variability of the quasar 3C 273 at 300 GHz is reported and implications of this variation for the quasar model are discussed. Measurements made with composite bolometers at the 3.6-m telescope at La Silla in July, 1981 at a signal to noise ratio of 10 or better show a two-fold drop in the intensity of 3C 273 in a time span of one day, followed a few days later by a less pronounced rise. Calculations of the apparent brightness temperature needed to produce this decrease give a lower limit of 1.9 x 10 to the 15th K. This value, combined with the Compton limit of 10 to the 12th K within the framework of the model of bulk relativistic motion close to the line of site can provide constraints on the model bulk Lorentz factor and the angle to the line of sight. It is concluded that combined observations in the mm, mm-VLBI and X-ray ranges should allow the unique determination of model parameters.
