Antarctic meteorites have been on the earth for on the order to 104 to 106 years and have apparently been transported great distances by glaciers. Whether chemical weathering of meteorites occurred during their encasement in ice or only after they were exposed to the atmosphere on stranding surfaces has been uncertain. Results for nesquehonite from LEW 85320 suggest that, at least for salt formation, weathering may be sufficiently rapid that most observable effects can develop in tens of years rather than over thousands of years.
