A new approach for efficient evaluation of the circularly averaged, incoherent optical transfer function (CATF) is proposed. Instead of the method of calculating the two-dimensional intensity point-spread-function grid and then the corresponding optical-transfer-function grid, a one-dimensional technique is described for computing CATF samples, starting from a pupil-function expansion into a circular harmonics set. The technique is recommended for use in computer routines for optical design.
