Laboratory simulation of maghemitization, the process believed to take place in submarine basalts, has produced conflicing data both as to the compositional range of the maghemitization products and their characteristic properties. The results of the present study suggest that titanomaghemite (in this case containing also Mg2+) can exist up to the maximum possible degree of oxidation at temperatures below about 350°C. Contour diagrams of Curie temperature and unit cell edge have been constructed for the synthesized system.
