The splitting of molecular energy levels of diatomic molecules gives rise to lambda-doublets, which are the source of some radioastronomical spectral lines. A likely interstellar diatomic molecule is NH+, but such a species has not yet been observed. Calculations based on sigma interactions have given rise to predictions of a rotational frequency of 13,625 MHz for NH+, which is in good agreement with laboratory measurements of 13,520 plus or minus 300 MHz.
