The authors report radio measurements of the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect towards the radio-quiet quasar PHL 957 at wavelengths λλ6.3 cm and 2.8 cm with the Effelsberg 100-m radio telescope. A combination of their results with the Einstein X-ray satellite observations of the PHL 957 region yields constraints on the size R and density ne of a uniform and spherical electron cloud of temperature Te that may be surrounding PHL 957. The small value of the optical depth for Compton scattering indicates that either the intervening absorption line systems are not associated with clusters of galaxies along the line of sight, or that cosmological evolution of the temperature and/or density of the intracluster medium has occurred.
