Over the next few years the ALFA pulsar survey is expected to find many hundreds of new pulsars. Due to its high resolution in both time and frequency this survey is especially sensitive to short-period pulsars, which could be be either young single pulsars, or older recycled pulsars in binaries.
Here we describe the impact our survey is expected to have on our understanding of the evolution of single and binary radio pulsars.
