The detection of radio emission from several classical novae which is attributable to the thermal bremsstrahlung mechanism within an isothermal, expanding shell of ionized gas may serve as a direct probe of such shells during early stages of their evolution. Attention is presently given to radio observations of Cygni 92 by means of the MERLIN radiotelescope array; the shell was first resolved 80 days after the initial outburst, showing nonspherical expansion and thermal-electron temperatures which swiftly exceeded the expected value for a radiatively-excited hydrogen plasma. A model is proposed in which the gas is heated by thermonuclear process-generated shocks.
