Excitation of the H II region NGC 1499 is investigated using high-resolution radio observations at 2695 MHz. Radio and optical data indicate that Xi Per is the only possible exciting star. However, it is shown that Xi Per must have a Lyman-continuum output much less than is indicated by its spectral type. A model of the area is proposed which is consistent with available data.
