Methods for measuring the coordinates and velocities of probes designed to study the circulation of planetary atmospheres are examined. The height and vertical velocity are determined from temperature and pressure measurements carried out by the probe. It is shown that the horizontal velocity and angular coordinates can be estimated with sufficient accuracy by simultaneously measuring the distance and the radial velocity of the probe from the earth and from an artificial satellite of the planet. Various uses of differential radio interferometry are examined. It is shown that the motion parameters of the probe may be determined either from combined interference frequency and phase measurements or from frequency measurements in conjunction with distance and radial velocity determinations. Errors of probe coordinate and velocity measurements are analyzed and methods of error calculation are presented.
