The progress of radio sky surveys is outlined, noting that the 50 yr old original sky survey revealed the region of strongest radio emission to be toward the center of the Galaxy. The advent of computers allowed detailed contour mapping and picture processing, and problems associated with making a cooperative and concerted effort at a sky map are outlined. A total of 3 billion readings were required to make a 408 MHz all-sky survey using equipment at Jodrell Bank and Effelsberg. Emissions from ionized hydrogen and supernova remnant regions were discovered along the galactic plane. Methods of study and interpretation of hot gas emissions and higher frequency bands in arcmin ranges are discussed, and the spiral structure of large-scale distributions of matter, magnetic fields, and cosmic rays are indicated.
