Because SETI-specific equipment is designed for the detection of technologically originated signals, it will ineluctably detect many signals generated by terrestrial technology. In 1983, a very high resolution spectrometer was used at Jodrell Bank to investigate the local interference in the 21-cm band (in which no transmissions were anticipated due to international protection of its frequencies) to furnish minimum design requirements for SETI equipment that must function in real, noisy environments. Continued proliferation of transmission capabilities on earth may someday require that a high earth orbit or lunar SETI facility be employed.
