It is shown that the region of increased electron temperature in a shock wave front propagating along the magnetic field at large distances from the sun can be bounded by a sharp jump in temperature (collisionless electron thermal wave); the width of this temperature-jump region is determined by the ion-acoustic turbulence developing in the opposing streams of hot and cool electrons. Energetic electrons moving away from the thermal wave front excite plasma waves, which are then converted into radio emission.
