The paper discusses measurements of the brightness temperature and dielectric constant of the Martian surface that were made at a wavelength of 3.2 cm in two linear orthogonal polarizations with an automatic radio telescope installed aboard Mars 5. The telescope is described along with the major sources of error, and similar measurements carried out aboard Mars 3 are reviewed. It is noted that the Mars 5 temperature data could not be deciphered. It is found that the values of the dielectric constant for several dark and bright regions of Mars turned out to be much lower than those measured by Mars 3.
