A fast and accurate algorithm for 2-D radiative transfer in axially symmetric media is presented. The method is based on an extension of the short characteristic technique to spherical coordinates and can handle both the optically thick and thin regimes. Our algorithm can be applied to a variety of astrophysical scenarios, ranging from accretion flows onto black holes to dusty stellar winds and planetary nebulae, for which the computational domain spans several orders of magnitude in radius. Some test calculations, which include thermal emission/absorption and scattering, illustrate the potentialities of the code.
