A calculation of a nongray, extended spherical circumstellar dust shell is presented. The study has been limited to an exploration of the following parameters: (a) angular dependence of the incident radiation field, (b) density distribution, (c) opacities, (d) relative extension of the dust shell, and (e) distance of the inner radius of the shell from the stellar surface. Anisotropic scattering has been included in an approximate manner. The results are applied to VY CMa. The properties of the model which give the best fit are: (1) a dust mixture of 70 percent iron and 30 percent silicates, (2) an inner (outer) shell radius of 5.505 x 10 to the 14 (3.0 x 10 to the 16) cm, and (3) a density law of the form n =zero (r/R) to the -1.
