The temperature variation of the rate coefficient k1 for CH3++H2→CH5++hν is computed treating the para and ortho forms of H2 separately, taking account of nuclear spin and using an accurate theory of the kinetics of association. The results are made absolute with the aid of the measurement at 13K by Barlow, Dunn, and Schauer. By combining this measurement with the CH5+ vibrational frequencies obtained by Pople from a quantal study, it is deduced that the probability of the stabilizing radiative transition is 5.4.×102s-1.
