Anisotropic scattering of parallel light rays by a semi-infinite homogeneous atmosphere is investigated. It is shown that the radiation intensity in the medium can be expressed in terms of an auxiliary function which depends only on one angular variable. It is also found that calculation of the intensity requires only knowledge of this function at the depth and boundary chosen and does not require any kind of integration over optical depth. Some integral correlations are obtained for the intensity in the diffuse-reflection and Milne problems. The problem of determining the radiation flux vector in a semi-infinite atmosphere is examined, and a simple asymptotic formula valid for any optical depth is derived for the flux-vector projection on the optical-depth axis in the case of nearly conserved scattering.
