The study presents surface and stellar CCD photometry in the central region of the nearby postcore-collapse globular cluster NGC 6397. U, B, V images obtained from the ESO at La Silla with the 1.5-m Danish telescope and B, V images taken under subarcsec seeing with the ESO New Technology Telescope were used. Two color-magnitude diagrams and a two-color one are presented. The blue straggler stars (BSs) reported by Auriere et al. (1990) are confirmed, and their list is expanded up to 18 stars for which positions, magnitudes, and color indices are given. The central blueing is due to a depletion of red giant stars for r greater than 7 arcsec and to a central group of six BSs in the inner zone. The surface brightness profile is consistent with postcollapse models of globular clusters, with a flat core of size 0.07 pc (6 arcsec on the sky) surrounded by a cusp of characteristic slope -0.72 +/- 0.02. The mean mass of BS and subgiant stars are in the ratio q = 1.49 +/- 0.35.
