We study the number density of galaxies as a function of radius in groups selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and compare these profiles to groups identified from mock galaxy catalogs. To create the mock catalogs, we place artificial galaxies within dark matter halos obtained from cosmological N-body simulations. We test our models for how the spatial distribution of galaxies relates to dark matter by comparing the radial number density profiles of SDSS groups with these mock catalogs. We find that a prescription that places a single galaxy at the center of each halo and allows satellite galaxies to trace the dark matter density distribution is consistent with the data. We measure radial density profiles separately for red and blue galaxies and find that the profiles of red galaxies are more centrally concentrated than those of blue galaxies. Moreover, we find that this density disparity is strongest in the most massive groups and clusters.
